Will the local boys be victorious in Toyota Cape Dealer Rally?

With a multitude of Western Cape based competitors participating in the upcoming Toyota Cape Dealer Rally chances are that we could once again see a home victory for the local lads.

Some of the Western Cape locals in top teams chasing for victory in the S2000 class include the likes of Giniel de Villiers (Castrol Team Toyota Yaris) and co-drivers Hilton Auffray, partnering with Gugu Zulu and Pierre Arries navigating for Hergen Fekken in the VW Sasolracing team.

15 Aug: In a word - stunning!  That is our assessment of the Imperial Toyota Tshwane Rally.  The battle that raged all day between Mark Cronje/Robin Houghton, and Leeroy Poulter/Elvene Coetzee was mesmerizing.  The gap changed by the stage, but in the end it was Poulter and Coetzee who came out on top after Cronje lost 16 minutes fixing a broken rose-joint.  Giniel de Villiers/Carolyn Swan kept Hergen Fekken/Pierre Arries at bay for 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Gut Botterill/Simon Vacy Lyle led S1600 from start to finish, with Paulus Franken/Henry Kohne finishing ahead of Chad Van beurden/Nico Swartz.  Fortunately, Matthew Vacy Lyle/Schalk Van Heerden emerged unscathed from their horrific roll, but their season is over.  Final results are here

Congratulations to Eddie Simpson/Jeremy Du Plessis for winning the Northern Regions Rally Championship.  Regional results are here

14 Aug: The Imperial Toyota Tshwane rally was a languid affair - just four stages and one third of the event completed.  Mark Cronje/Robin Houghton eked out a 12.2 second lead over Leeroy Poulter/Elvene Coetzee.  Giniel de Villiers/Carolyn Swan are third, just 6 seconds ahead of Hergen Fekken/Pierre Arries.  The fight is going to be intense...The only casualty was Henk Lategan; concrete ditch in stage 3 split the sump.  They superally tomorrow...

In S1600, Guy Botterill/Simon Vacy Lyle lead Chad van Beurden/Nico Swartz by 9.1 seconds...Richard leeke is another 13 seconds back, and AC Potgieter 1.8 seconds.  There is a long way to go...Day one results are here...

13 Aug: The Spectator Guide and Start List for the Imperial Toyota Tshwane Rally have been loaded here

11 Aug: The Imperial Toyota Tshwane Rally book of maps and itinerary have been loaded here

29 July: The Imperial Toyota Tshwane Rally regs are available here

28 July: The Northern Regions Rally Championship, after seven rounds, is going to be a humdinger.  Eddie Simpson is the only driver to have finished every round and thus the only driver to shed points as seven rounds count.  It is a three-horse race between Simpson, Richard Leeke and Natie Booysen.  In the co-driver's title chase, it is a four way fight between Jeremy Du Plessis, Mari van der Walt, Les McKenzie and Rikus Fourie.  Roll on Tshwane Rally...Points are here and the seedings here

18 July: The heavens opened over the Eastern Cape but the status quo remained.  Leeroy Poulter/Elvene Coetzee made it two in a row, finishing 27.2 seconds ahead of Mark Cronje/Robin Houghton and Giniel de Villiers/Carolyn Swan. The daunting 47km long PPC stage saw Poulter and Cronje set a time just 0.7 seconds apart.  In the rain!  Through Longmore.  Very brave...

Paulus Franken/Henry Kohne won S1600, ahead of Matthew Vacy Lyle/Schalk van heerden and Richard Leeke/Rikus Fourie.  The last two stages were cancelled due to flooding in the stage...Final results are here

17 July: It was a bloodbath - just ten cars from the 22 NRC starters made it through the day unscathed - not entirely unscathed, but reached parc ferme at the PE Oval Track.  Leeroy Poulter/Elvene Coetzee stormed into the lead and never looked back.  Mark Cronje/Robin Houghton have given valiant chase but a 35.8 second lead is highly defendable by the Toyota crew.

Ginil de Villiers/Carolyn Swan are just 7 seconds away in 3rd.  Japie Van Niekerk is 4th, Hergen Fekken 5th, Gugu Zulu 6th (after breaking suspension in SS3) and Henk Lategan is 7th (Puncture SS2 - wheel stuck).

In S1600, just three cars made it to the end of the day's racing. Three! Paulus Franken (VW Polo) lead from Mathew Vacy Lyle and a remarkable comeback by Tjaart Conradie (Ford).

We move to Longmore Forest tomorrow for two stages, including the longest of the season.  Goodnight from PE. Day one results are here

Guy Botterill/Simon Vacy Lyle took command of class S1600, ahead of Chad van beurden/Nico Swartz (Ford) {Yes, you read right, Ford} and Matthew Vacy Lyle/Schalk van Heerden.

Final results are here

23 Nov: The 2014 Bela Bela Motor Rally gallery is available here

23 Nov: Hans Weijs/Bjorn Degandt ended a two year drought for Volkswagen Sasolracing, taking a well-judged victory on the Bela Bela Motor Rally.  Leeroy Poulter/Elvene Coetzee led from the start, seemingly untouchable, until they suffered engine failure in stage 7.  After the 90 minute single service on Saturday, Mark Cronje and Robin Houghton were just 1.8 seconds from the lead but a puncture ended their chances.

Hergen Fekken/Carolyn Swan ended 3rd overall, ahead of a mechanically troubled Henk Lategan/Barry White and Gugu Zulu/Carl Peskin.

Super 1600 was a thriller: After Guy Botterill/Simon Vacy Lyle retired on Friday it became a four-way fight for the win and 2nd in the overall championship standings.

Chad van Beurden/Nico Swartz led until engine failure in stage five leaving one of three to claim their maiden win and second in the season's standings. Paul Franken/Henry Kohne, Mathew Vacy Lyle/Schalk van Heerden and Ernie van der Walt/Rowan Robbertse all had a chance.  Vacy Lyle took the lead from Franken only for a rim failure to knock them out, handing the lead back to Franken, who claimed his maiden win.

Fields have been fairly thin, but the competition has been intense and the NRC has, we believe, done a magnificent job to keep the championship going in spite of adverse economic conditions and lack of sponsorship.

Final Results are here, no thanks to the Prince of Darkness - Eskom - who pulled the plug. Again

18 Oct: Congratulations to Leeroy Poulter and Elvene Coetzee on winning the 2014 SA Rally Championship. Elvene is the first woman co-driver's champion since Minota Van Bergen in 1970! Guy Botterill and Simon Vacy Lyle took S1600 title, Toyota wrapped up the Manufacturer's Championship and Wilro Dippenaar/Kesevan Naidoo the S2000 Challenge.

Poulter led from stage 2 and was never headed.  Mark Cronje's challenge ended in stage 2, while Hergen  Fekken faded from the picture  in stage 7.  Attrition was high with ten retirements on day 1, of which 8 returned under Superally rules for day 2 but they soon dropped like flies once again.

Hans Weijs and stand in co-driver Hans Van Goor gave Volkswagen Sasolracing a 2nd place finish with Wilro Dippenaar/kesevan Naidoo taking their first ever overall podium.

Final results are here

In S1600, it was back to business as usual with Guy Botterill/Simon Vacy Lyle taking their fifth victory from six.  Paul Franken/Henry Kohne and Chris Coertse/Mari van der Walt completed the podium.  Final results are here

4 Jun: Please have your say on the new Poll regarding amalgamating the fractured Gauteng-based Regional Rally Championships.  I would think it is better to have one series working together to grow the sport, and not two series that seem hell-bent on splitting competitors to the detriment of the sport.  The "huge" prize funds cannot possibly be sustainable, and holding opposing events ON THE SAME day serves no one's interests. There's not enough marshals and other critical officials to service both events...

3 Jun: The 2014 Volkswagen Rally guide is available here

2 Jun: The story on the main page regarding the Jim Clark Rally in Scotland yesterday is a chilling reminder that motorsport in genera,l and rallying in particular, can be dangerous. I was witness to the near-collision of a colleague's partner in thick dust last weekend.  She was standing on the 'safer' inside of a series of corners, yet a competitor, blinded in dust, turned too soon and nearly drove over her, the consequences of which don't bear thinking about.

Never take it for granted that you are 'safe'; stay alert, and sober.  Just because it "hasn't happened", doesn't mean it can't...

27 Jan: NRC - with less than 40 days to go, there are lots of changes afoot, some we're still sworn to secrecy.  Toyota will field two Yarises for Johnny Gemmell and Carolyn Swan and Leeroy Poulter and Elvene Coetzee.  Giniel is likely to start the season with an Auris and an as yet un-named co-driver*.

Volkswagen is due to announce their plans in Port Elizabeth this Thursday (31 Jan).  The identity of the third driver remains under wraps*

Mark Cronje and Robin Houghton continue with their Ford Fiesta, but according to social network sites, Jon Williams is still seeking financial support.

Japie van Niekerk and Jan Habig continue as before.

In S2000 Challenge, there is much movement: JP Damseaux and Mohammed Moosa both fall in this category as their machines are now superceded.  Wilro Dippenaar and Kesevan Naidoo team up in an ex works Auris; Stefanie Botha will appear in a RunX said to be navigated by Tommy du Toit.  Nic van der Westhuizen and Stefan Cilliers have the ex-Leeroy Poulter car under the SA Earthworks banner.  Morne Janse van Rensburg is rumoured to be moving up with Rikus Fourie, while former A5 driver Piet Bakkes makes an appearance in a RunX with Johan Aucamp.  And what of Nicholas Ryan...?

In S1600, Ashley Haigh Smith will likely miss four rounds of the NRC as he campaigns in WRC 3.  Craig Trott will have a fairer co-driver, it is said, off-spring of a well-known former driver*.  The Botterill Motorsport twins continue as before, while we're hearing Megan Verlaque collected a Polo R2 at VW Motorsport.  Clint Weston and Chris Coertse have yet to announce their plans but changes are in the air as well, 'tis said*.

An exciting newcomer from the ranks of Polo Cup/Formula VW will have a Polo R2 and a respected navigator*.  We expect Paul Franken/Henry Kohne to be back, but with the Corolla or something more modern?*  Thilo Himmell and Armand du Toit are expected to pitch with an Etios, while there may be another Ford on the horizon.

By our reckoning, the field should contain 9 - 10 S2000s, 8 - 9 S2000 Challenge and 10-11 S1600 competitors.  There are two teams who will compete in selected 'local' events only, one being Murray Lloyd and one in the coastal region*...

And if you wonder what * means, we know but are not allowed to say - yet.
